World Fruit Day was observed on May 3, however, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), in partnership with the Central American and Panama Institute of Nutrition (INCAP), had activities the entire week promoting healthy eating habits in preschools and primary schools countrywide.

“Activities in connection with World Fruit Day continue this week with health education of children on the benefits of healthy eating habits,” the Health Ministry posted on social media on Thursday.

That same day, Ministry of Health and Wellness representatives visited the Santiago Juan Preschool and Bishop OP Martin RC School to promote healthy eating habits.

On May 3, World Fruit Day itself the MOHW reminded Belizeans of the importance of including fruits and vegetables in our diets.

“On this World Fruit Day, the Nutrition Unit reminds you that fruits and vegetables contain important vitamins, minerals, and plant chemicals. They prevent diseases like cancer, heart diseases, and diabetes,” said the MOHW in a social media post.

The MOHW went on to say that fruits contribute to people enjoying a better life.

“If we practice eating five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity can be prevented,” said the MOHW.
