Vampire Survivors adds a bunch of OP cheat codes for the lulz
The wondrous OTT bullet hell extravaganza that is Vampire Survivors has received another free update and, as has been the case since its early access release, solo developer Poncle continues to overdeliver. I spoke to him in March about the game’s unexpected (but well-deserved) success, and one of the most refreshing things was his attitude towards game balance:
“I don’t care so much about the balance of the game. It’s a single-player game,” says Luca ‘Poncle’ Galante (opens in a new tab). “I’m more than happy for people to go for what they have fun with.”
This new patch certainly leans into that. Since launch, Vampire Survivors has had a bonus code or two, a nice tribute from a developer who clearly loves Konami, but this new update adds an absolute ton of cheat codes to the game. You enter them in the main menu and it’s things like “icanhearthecriesofcaptainplanet”. There’s something quite nostalgic about all of this: it’s especially nice that some cheat codes echo common whines or complaints about the game.
Needless to say, the full list can be found quite easily, and will allow any gamer to basically make themselves a screen-nuking god right off the bat, or move on to highlights and bosses, or for whatever reason , type “spinnn” to see the main menu spin up a bit. It’s nice to see Poncle’s philosophy that “this is a single-player game, damn it” find such unexpected and fun expression, and one that will simply translate into more fun for players.
In a very trendy way, the full patch notes (opens in a new tab) come with Vampire Survivors cats, and here is the recap:
New content
- 2 new characters
- 1 new relic
- 2 new achievements
- 1 new arcana
- Incredible SECRETS
Adjustments
- Added a new music track in The Bone Zone
- The “I – Gemini” arcana also includes Gatti Amari and Nduja Fritta.
Sadly, this also fixes Nduja’s endless problem in the dairy factory 🙁 - Arcane “V – Chaos in the Dark Night” changed to: “Overall projectile speed continuously changes between -50% and +50% over 10 seconds. Character begins to gain +1% projectile speed at each level .”
- Arcana “XVII – Lost & Found Painting” changed to: “Global duration continuously changes between -50% and +50% over 10 seconds. Character starts gaining +1% duration at each level.”
- Arcana “XVIII – Boogaloo of Illusions” changed to: “Global area continuously changes between -25% and +25% over 10 seconds. Character starts gaining +1% area at each level.”
Work in progress
- On-screen keyboard for touchscreen and gamepad users.
- More spells.
Vampire Survivors was one of the biggest surprises of the year, and it’s a game that still takes me an hour or two every now and then. It’s just a massive amount of fun (opens in a new tab), throwaway as it may be, and one of the attractions is the game’s carefree attitude to keep you as in control as possible: something that Poncle continues to double down on in impressive post-launch updates. This game costs three dollars (opens in a new tab)and continues to be worth every penny and more.
